What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key)originates in Japan. The word Reiki translates to "Universal Life Energy".
Reiki was founded in the early 1900's by Dr. Mikao Usui, a "seeker of spiritual truth" and a Tendai Buddhist Monk. Dr. Usui came to have a revelation about healing after fasting/meditation for 21 days. He developed a technique and found certain ailments responded well to this practice. Reiki was so well received he opened a larger school outside Tokyo, where his students continued his work.
Reiki's journey to the Western world...
Chujiro Hayashi, an ex. naval officer and Doctor in the Japanese Navy, trained with Dr. Usui in 1925 at the age of 47. It is believed he is the originator of the "hand system" used in Western Reiki. Dr. Hayashi left the Usui school and opened a small clinic in Tokyo named "Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu-kai."
Hawayo was born in Kauai, Hawaii, to Japanese Immigrants. At the age of 34, her husband Saichi died, leaving Hawayo to raise her family. Having to provide for her family came with long work days and little rest which in turn caused physical illness/ailments and a nervous breakdown.
One of Hawayo's sisters died, which drew her back to Japan. It was here that she sought out help for her poor health. It was here that she met Dr. Hayashi. She received Reiki treatments 2x per day and in four months time she was completely healed. Impressed by this she was inspired to learn this technique for healing. She became a Reiki Master in 1938 at her practice in Hawaii. She in turn went on to initiate 22 other Reiki Masters, who continued to teach this healing technique across the world.
In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client typically lies on a massage table, however treatment can be given while the client is seated or standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands on or near the clients body in a sequence of specific hand positions. Areas of the body that are included are the head/shoulders, the stomach and the feet. Other, more specifc positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to five minutes, or as needed in each area. The whole treatment usually lasts between 45 and 60 minutes.
Reiki energy connects our higher self with all that is around us. We all have the power to heal ourselves. What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation, an overall sense of well-being or peace are quite common.
The benefits of Reiki are unique for each person, but the benefits below are a few commonly experienced.
